Labor Day is coming soon and the chance to win scholarships related to Labor Day or more specifically, associated with a labor union, could be an option this year or perhaps the next. Although many of us think of Labor Day as a day off from school or work, in addition to an opportunity to visit the pool or barbecue at the end of summer, Labor Day is actually meant to serve as a national holiday to celebrate those who work.
So Labor Day should also bring to mind labor unions. In many locations, labor unions offer scholarships to children and other close relatives of their members. And, in at least one Florida area where the International Longshoremen’s Association #1408 is located, membership is not required for their scholarship opportunity.
Check with the labor unions in your area to determine if there are scholarship opportunities available to you! Also, if someone in your family is a member of a labor union, read this excerpt from The Scholarship Research Questionnaire section of
Winning Scholarships for College to help you find scholarships specific to you and your family. Not only could you learn about scholarships associated with labor unions, you could also uncover scholarships related to where you live, where you or your parents work, your family history or heritage, a disability, and more.
If you or your parents are members of a union, trade group, or association, you may be eligible to win scholarships such as the E. C. Hallbeck Memorial Scholarship offered by the
American Postal Workers Union to high school seniors who are dependents of active or deceased members of the union. Or consider the scholarship program from
Union Plus, an organization established by the AFL- CIO to provide consumer benefits to members and retirees of participating labor unions.
